Master Creating Assets for Games using Photogrammetry

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Assets for Games using Photogrammetry, a step-by-step guide to creating game assets from real-world source photos recorded by EA DICE’s Guilherme Rambelli.

The training forms a companion to Environment Creation for VR using Photogrammetry, Rambelli’s previous tutorial, this time focusing on an exterior environment rather than an interior scene.

A complete step-by-step to creating production-ready game assets from source photos
Over the course of four and a half hours of videos, Rambelli reveals his process for creating game-ready assets based on real-world source photographs using a range of free and commercial software packages.

The tutorial begins with a live-action video demonstrating all of the necessary angles from which to photograph an object in order to obtain a clean 360-degree reconstruction.

The images are then colour-corrected using ColorChecker Passport and Lightroom, before passing them to photogrammetry software RealityCapture to generate the 3D geometry and base colour map.

Rambelli then processes the raw geometry in ZBrush and Maya, reducing its poly count, retopologising the model, and creating proper UVs.

He then uses Unity’s free de-lighting tool to remove the shadows and highlights from the base colour map, and bakes the other texture maps needed for a PBR workflow in Substance Painter.

Finally, Rambelli assembles the assets in a diorama in Marmoset Toolbag, exploring key scene assembly, lighting and post-processing techniques.

About the artist
Guilherme Rambelli began his career at There Studios, helping to create promos for clients including Marvel, Hasbro, Bravo TV and Toyota, creating, scanning and assembling 3D environments.

In 2015, he joined volumetric capture firm 8i, creating environments for VR experiences with NASA, Warner Bros, Buzz Aldrin and other clients.

Rambelli currently works as a 3D artist at EA DICE on the Battlefield franchise, as well as researching new methodologies to create real-time content.
