Gnomon ships Introduction to Substance Painter 2018

The Gnomon Workshop has released Introduction to Substance Painter 2018, a complete guide to Allegorithmic’s texture painting software that promises to turn you from “zero to hero in three hours”.

The video training was recorded by Naughty Dog lead technical artist and noted Substance Painter power user Christophe Desse.

Master production-proven workflows in Substance Painter in a morning
Actually clocking in at a little over three hours, Introduction to Substance Painter 2018 provides a complete crash course on an application that has become an industry standard in game development.

Beginning by introducing Substance Painter’s key tools and features, Desse then goes deeper into real production workflows, showing his own workflow for texturing a detailed walker-bot model and its driver.

During the videos, Desse explores how to recreate a range of different types of real-world materials, for both organic characters and hard-surface assets.

Topics covered include Substance Painter’s UI, the built-in Iray renderer, texture sets and materials, Smart Materials, projections, stencils, baking, anchor points, and how to approach hard-surface weathering.

About the artist
Christophe Desse is lead technical artist at Naughty Dog, where he has worked on The Last of Us, and the entire Uncharted series. He previously worked as a VFX artist and modeller for advertising, TV and movies.
