Allegorithmic ships Substance Painter 2018.1.2

Allegorithmic has released Substance Painter 2018.1.2, the latest update to its 3D texture painting software, improving baking speed and updating the save system to help reduce project file sizes.

Faster baking and choice of new save modes
The update marks the start of an “extensive rework” of Substance Painter’s texture baking system, due to roll out across several releases.

According to Allegorithmic, baking is already “up to 5x” faster, particularly on heavy meshes like scan data.

The save system has also been reworked, giving users a choice of fast, iterative saves, or slower, more compact saves to reduce project file sizes when working on complex projects.

Modifications to features added in the last release
Other changes modify features introduced in March’s Spring 2018 update.

The option to control sliders with the arrow keys – removed by March’s UI update – is back, and there is also a new ‘precision’ mode for making smaller adjustments, activated by holding [Shift].

It is also now possible to choose between the new 3D Neighbor Space padding system, designed for hand painting details across UV seams, and UV Space Neighbor Padding, for when little painting is needed.

Other changes include a new Chinese language edition, and a number of fixes, listed in the release notes.

Pricing and availability
Substance Painter 2018.1.2 is available for Windows 7+, CentOS 6.6/Ubuntu 12.4 Linux and Mac OS X 10.11+.

New Indie licences, intended for artists and studios earning less than $100,000 per year, cost $149, including 12 months’ maintenance. Further updates cost $75/year. A floating Pro licence costs $990.
