Eye candy: Gnomon award-winning CG short Lost Fish

Top CG school Gnomon – School of Visual Effects, Games and Animation has announced its latest Best of Term awards, including a gorgeous Grand Prize winner in the shape of Lost Fish, Alla Chernova‘s CG short.

A beautiful, painterly visual effects short with a darker twist
Based on a concept by Sergey Kolesov, the dreamlike 20-second clip pans down from a seemingly idyllic tropical landscape to reveal a giant mermaid lying dead in the water beneath two fishing boats.

Blood simulation was carried out by Stefan King, character animation by Karina Villanueva, and the fisherman model created by Jesse McAlister, with Chernova tackling all other aspects of the project.

It’s a particularly impressive project given that Chernova only enrolled at Gnomon in 2016 – although its painterly qualities may be no surprise given her background: she previously trained in the restoration of oil and tempera paintings at the Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

Together, the winners represent some of the world’s best student art: Gnomon was voted animation school of the year at the 2017 Rookies awards, and overall school of the year in 2014 and 2015.
