Master Environment Creation for VR Using Photogrammetry

The Gnomon Workshop has released Environment Creation for VR using Photogrammetry, a step-by-step guide to creating a photorealistic environment inside Unity, recorded by EA DICE’s Guilherme Rambelli.

A complete step-by-step to creating a production-ready VR environment
Over the course of the tutorial, which runs for just under three hours, Rambelli reveals his process for creating a virtual reality environment inside the Unity game engine based on real-world source photographs.

Rambelli begins by pre-processing images using Adobe’s free DNG Converter and creating a colour profile using ColorChecker Passport, before passing the images to Lightroom for further treatment.

He then generates a high-resolution source asset using photogrammetry tool RealityCapture, cleaning and retopologising the model in ZBrush and Maya, and baking textures in free tool xNormal.

When imported into Unity, the result is a high-quality VR scene, created within a typical production schedule.

About the artist
Guilherme Rambelli began his career at There Studios, helping to create promos for clients including Marvel, Hasbro, Bravo TV and Toyota, creating, scanning and assembling 3D environments.

In 2015, he joined volumetric capture firm 8i, creating environments for VR experiences with NASA, Warner Bros, Buzz Aldrin and other clients.

Rambelli currently works as a 3D artist at EA DICE on the Battlefield franchise, as well as researching new methodologies to create real-time content.

Pricing and availability
Environment Creation for VR using Photogrammetry is available via an online subscription to The Gnomon Workshop, giving you access to over 300 detailed tutorials. Subscriptions cost $49/month or $490/year.
