Flowbox ships Flowbox 1.6

Flowbox has released Flowbox 1.6, the latest update to its rotoscoping software, adding its new F-Splines system, the option to split roto data to separate channels, and to import corner pins from Mocha and Nuke.

First released in 2016, and developed by a team including former staff of Poland’s Alvernia Studios, Flowbox provides a well-thought-out set of roto drawing and animation tools, and an intelligent ripple editing system.

The biggest feature in version 1.6 is the new spline representation: originally scheduled to be B-splines, but now F-splines, Flowbox’s own system that “combines the unique powers of Béziers and X-splines”.

You can see it in action at the start of the video above: the system enables users to create continuous closed curves by setting points to form a bounding box, then reshaped by dragging points or control handles.

New Crop tool, Hard Edge Checker and improved pipline interoperability
Other key changes include the option to split roto data to separate channels when rendering, to reduce computation times and to give more flexibility in a composite.

There is also a new crop tool, enabling users to crop in on the region of a frame being rotoscoped, improving interactivity when working with high-res footage. The crop region can be animated between frames.

When working with shots with motion blur, a new Hard Edge Checker view displays the actual outline of the moving object, helpint to position roto shapes correctly.

Finally, Flowbox has added pipeline support for Mocha, BorisFX’s planar tracking system: the 1.6 update makes it possible to import corner pin data from both Mocha and Nuke.
