Eye candy: Unreal Engine and Unity’s GDC 2018 sizzle reels

The two giants of commercial game engine development, Epic Games and Unity Technologies, have posted new GDC 2018 sizzle reels showing the best recent titles created with their engines.

At just under four minutes, Epic Games’ Unreal Engine sizzle reel (above) is the longer of the two, and features the bigger commercial hits, including Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds and Epic’s own Fortnite.

It’s also the more visually diverse, ranging from the 2.5D Dragon Ball FighterZ through the cel-shaded Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker to more realistic titles like Hellblade: Sensua’s Sacrifice.

In some cases, it’s literally photorealistic: the middle section features visualisation work done in UE4 by the likes of Cityscape Digital and Mackevision, along with some neat broadcast and mixed reality projects.

However, there are a good selection of indie titles in there: notably Moss, Polyarc’s charming VR puzzle title, and street art-inspired third-person adventure Concrete Genie, also featured heavily in Epic’s keynote.

The Unity reel is shorter, more stylised, and more offbeat – as might be expected of a platform now used to create 50% of the world’s new mobile games, and the majority of its VR and AR titles.

There is some photorealistic work in there – much of it created by Unity Technologies itself, in the shape of its own Book of the Dead demo and the heavily Unity-backed Adam: The Mirror.

But for us, the real stars of the show are its more painterly projects, from Moon Studios’ gorgeous upcoming Ori and the Will of the Wisps, to CG short Sonder, directed by ex-Pixar animator Neth Nom.
