Motiva unveils Unknit for Unreal Engine and 3ds Max

Motiva has posted an “informal sneak peek” at Unknit, an interesting upcoming UV unwrwapping and packing solution for Unreal Engine and 3ds Max.

The software is intended to pack UV islands automatically to minimise use of texture space, and to avoid very small islands that can cause issues in game engines like UE4, or apps like Substance Designer.

No other info yet, but Motiva’s previous products make it one to watch
And that’s it: Motiva doesn’t go into detail about the feature set, but to judge by the video above, workflow is essentially ‘set the maximum level of UV stretching you’re prepared to tolerate, and hit Start’.

However, the company has a proven pedigree in real-time graphics: as well as relighting tool Colimo, the firm developed MUS – later to become Datasmith, Epic Games’ CAD-to-Unreal-Engine toolkit.

Pricing and availability
Motiva is due for release in the first quarter of 2018. In a post on the Unreal Engine forums, lead developer Victor Feliz promises a “big promo price”, but gives no other information on pricing.
