Eye candy: Pixar’s 2017 RenderMan demo reel

Pixar has posted its 2017 RenderMan demo reel: a three minute compilation of the most eye-catching feature animation and visual effects work created using its production renderer over the past year.

Aside from Pixar itself, the vast majority of work on the reel comes from just two studios: a reflection of how much newer rivals like Arnold and V-Ray have eaten into RenderMan’s share of the market.

However, those two studios are two of the biggest names in the industry: Industrial Light & Magic and MPC.

The work on show – which includes key shots from Rogue One, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Ghost in the Shell – is of equally stellar quality.

Outside of visual effects, feature animation is represented by brief clips of LAIKA’s Kubo and the Two Strings; and commercials by Tippett Studio’s work for multi-player mobile game Monster Strike.

There’s even an independent short in there: Quorum Studios’ Borrowed Time – although given that it was created by two Pixar artists in their free time, it isn’t exactly your typical indie production.
