See a special free screening of The Ningyo next weekend
Gnomon is hosting a free screening of The Ningyo, VFX artist and director Miguel Ortega’s cryptozoology-themed period short, at its Hollywood campus next weekend, followed by a Q&A with the director.
The show marks the opening of The Art of The Ningyo, an exhibition of production art from the film, including creature and environment concepts, 3D sculpts and costumes, at the school’s Gnomon Gallery.

A Faustian tale about a paleontologist’s obsessive quest for mythological creatures, The Ningyo has been a four-year labour of love for Ortega and his partner and producer/production designer Tran Ma.
As the director told CG Channel in 2013, during principal photography, the pair turned their own house into a giant movie set, even transforming their bedroom into a “college professor’s office, circa 1909”.
As well as being able to see how the result turned out, visitors to Gnomon will be able to meet Ortega and Ma in person and take part in a live Q&A session.
The screening will be followed by the launch event for The Art of the Ningyo exhibition, and includes free drinks plus the chance to pick up one of a limited number of free signed posters from the film.
Free to attend, but register in advance
The screening of The Ningyo and Q&A with Miguel Ortega and Tran Ma takes place at Gnomon’s Hollywood campus on Saturday 13 May from 7.30-8.30pm. The gallery launch event follows it, and runs until 11pm.
Both are free to attend, but seating for the screening is available on a first-come-first-served basis, so you’ll need to register in advance to guarantee a seat. The event isn’t being Livestreamed.
The Art of The Ningyo runs at Gnomon Gallery until 21 June. Entry is free, and the exhibition is open from 9am to 6pm, Mondays to Fridays.
