Frame.io launches Frame.io 2

Frame.io has released Frame.io 2, the latest update to its online collaboration and shot review system, adding “more than 100 new features and improvements”, including a customisable new client review system.

A streamlined, user-focused collaboration and video review system
Launched in 2015, Frame.io has gained an enviable client list, from the BBC and CBS to NASA and Tesla.

Although targeted at editors, it has many of the features you’d expect in more VFX-focused systems, including versioning, on-screen annotations, and a side-by-side view for comparing changes to a shot.

It’s also heavily focused on user experience, with its online documentation emphasising the upload speed for large files, and claiming its playback system to be “the internet’s coolest video player”.

While the latter is a matter of opinion, the Frame.io iPhone app did win a 2016 Apple Design Award.

New in version 2: login-free client Review Pages system
To that, version 2 adds a new, login-free Review Pages system, enabling studios to “give clients the same commenting powers as collaborators, without exposing them to the full Frame.io interface”.

According to Frame.io, the system is highly user-configurable, and client feedback is directly integrated with the After Effects and Premiere timelines.

A range of workflow improvements
The Frame.io dashboard has also been redesigned, with new features including a new ‘breadcrumb bar’ for navigating nested directories, and the option to hover scrub video thumbnails in the list view.

The video player gets a new ‘comment heads’ system in the timeline, letting users see at a glance who has left feedback; a new SMPTE-compliant source timecode display; and the option to publish directly to Vimeo.

There are also a lot of new workflow features, including improved support for exporting comments and annotations to Final Cut Pro X and Media Composer. Read the full list via the link at the foot of the story.

Pricing and availability
Frame.io is avaiable on a subscription-only basis, with commercial plans ranging from $15/month for three projects and up to 10 collaborators, to $150/month for an unlimited number of projects and collaborators.
