Rotem Shiffman releases VFB+ 2.8 for 3ds Max for free

Artist and tools developer Rotem Shiffman has released VFB+ 2.8, the latest update to his advanced frame buffer for 3ds Max, and made it available as freeware. The plugin previously sold for $19.

An advanced, renderer-agnostic virtual frame buffer for 3ds Max
First released in 2011, VFB+ provides a more feature-rich version of 3ds Max’s native frame buffer.

The plugin preserves a user’s render history, automatically saving all of the session renders, including all of the render elements and G-buffer channels.

It also provides a colour correction toolkit with exposure, level and gamma controls; vignetting; chromatic aberration; multi-channel curve editing; and 3D LUT support.

Operations are performed in full 32-bit colour depth, and can be launched while a render is in progress.

Other features include a 2D depth of field post-process effect; a range of other filters including noise-reduction; and a ‘Stamper’ option for watermarking renders or adding text overlays.

It works with any third-party renderer that uses the native 3ds Max frame buffer, including mental ray, Iray, finalRender and, when not using their own custom frame buffers, V-Ray and Corona.

Now supports very large images – and available for free
To that, the 2.8 update adds support for images over 2GB in size and – if you’re using 3ds Max 2017 – support for HiDPI monitors. It also makes the software available for free.

In a post on his blog, Shiffman comments: “I initially decided to make [VFB+] a commercial plugin in the hopes that it would motivate me to continue working on it, and it did!”

“I now feel that the software is at a place which is more feature-complete and polished, and I want to make it accessible to as many people as possible.”

Availability and system requirements
VFB+ 2.8 is available free for 3ds Max 2009-2017. Shiffman says that he will continue to release bugfixes and maintenance updates, but can’t guarantee that he will update the software for future versions of 3ds Max.
