The Gnomon Workshop ships TRex Lookdev and Lighting

The Gnomon Workshop has released TRex Lookdev and Lighting, a detailed guide to professional look development workflows in Maya and Arnold, recorded by Double Negative CG Supervisor Charles Chorein.

An invaluable guide to lighting CG assets to match live footage
In the video, which lasts just under four hours, Chorein explores different techniques for integrating CG elements with live-action backgrounds, using an animated Tyrannosaurus rex as a case study.

Chorein begins with a grey-shaded turntable, uses grey, chrome and white sphere reference data to improve integration, then delves into Arnold’s global settings and Ai Skydome and area lights.

The video also demonstrates how to use Arnold’s alShaders alongside various texture maps while finalising the lighting and evaluating the animation for the scene.

Chorein composites the final shot in Nuke, adjusting beauty, shadown and reflection layers, and adding chromatic aberration and camera shake to finalise the result.

The Gnomon Workshop describes the tutorial as providing invaluable information on matching the lighting of CG objects to that of live footage, explained by an experienced CG supervisor.
