Google has released Tilt Brush Toolkit, a free collection of scripts and assets aimed at developers hoping to import data from the increasingly popular virtual reality painting tool into their software.

Tilt Brush: a literal 3D painting tool for home use and VR concept art
Released earlier this year, Tilt Brush is a 3D painting application in an unusually literal sense of the word, enabling users of the HTC Vive VR headset to paint in virtual 3D space.

Although it’s kind of a consumer toy – it costs $29.99 and it’s available via Steam – Tilt Brush is already finding its way into professional VR production, with studios adopting it for concept art and storyboarding.

New toolkit helps integrate Tilt Brush in VR production pipelines
While it’s already possible to export data in FBX format – and, as of last month, to import OBJ files – the new toolkit should make Tilt Brush easier to integrate with standard pipeline tools.

The project’s GitHub repo includes Python scripts for reading/writing and packing/unpacking the software’s native .tilt files, plus sample code for viewing raw Tilt Brush data.

Availability
The Tilt Brush Toolkit can be downloaded for free via the link below. Somewhat confusingly, it contains the disclaimer, ‘This is not an official Google product’, although it’s hosted on the Google GitHub repo.
