Gnomon releases Creating a Gun in Modo

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating a Gun in Modo, a new guide to prop design with The Foundry’s 3D modelling and rendering software recorded by veteran games artist Tor Frick.

Master professional prop design techniques
In the video, which lasts just under four hours, Frick shares his workflow for designing, modelling and texturing a sci-fi weapon.

As well as showing the process from end to end, the tutorial explores other useful techniques, including the use of a basic animation setup to check that everything works before blocking out the design.

While building the gun, Frick also sets up a kitbash and Boolean library, and explains how best to use them.

In addition, the video explains how to use Modo’s shaders and procedural effects to create a realistically textured model without the need for UV mapping.

About the artist
Tor Frick has over a decade of experience working in the entertainment industry as an art director, concept artist and environment artist.

He was art director on MachineGames’ Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, and has contributed to other titles including Far Cry 3, Gears of War 3, Doom and Fallout 4.
