CLO Virtual Fashion has unveiled Marvelous Designer 6, the next update to its 3D clothing design tool, releasing the software in closed beta for current users prior to its public release.

The update extends Marvelous Designer’s ability to modify 3D clothing directly after it has been generated, and adds the option to retime animations generated with the software.

Convert 2D patterns into animated 3D clothing
Widely used by games, VFX and animation studios, Marvelous Designer enables artists to design garments in the same way as real-world clothes, by stitching virtual pattern parts together.

Users can import a character model in OBJ or Collada format to drape clothing over, then export the result back to a 3D application as an OBJ, or in the Maya cache, PC2 or MDD point cache formats.

The 3D clothing responds to gravity and wind forces, and the resulting simulations can also be exported.

New tools for editing 3D clothing models and animation directly
Marvelous Designer 6 extends the software’s range of tools for modifying 3D clothing directly, rather than making changes to the 2D pattern and re-generating the 3D garment.

New options include tools for creating buttons and buttonholes, for ‘steaming‘ a garment interactively to reduce wrinkles, or conversely, to solidify the mesh to preserve folds and wrinkles even during simulations.

Users can also draw virtual chalk lines on a 3D garment to trim the fabric directly on the 3D model.

Other new features include Scene Time Warp, which speeds up or slows down animation generated within the software; and updates to the pattern design tools and character avatar display options.

Updated 12 September: Marvelous Designer 6 is shipping for Windows XP+ and OS X 10.8+. A permanent licence costs $550, or there are subscription options.
