The open-source Godot game engine has released a stable 2.1 release, adding a new online asset-sharing system and a new plugin API, and improving font support and workflow.

Originally Argentinian developer Okam Studio‘s in-house engine, and made available as open source in 2014, Godot has been used in production on PC, mobile and console titles.

Games can be deployed to Windows, Mac OS X and Linux; Android, to iOS and Blackberry devices; and in HTML5 format. You can read an overview of the key features here.

New online Asset Library and plugin API, improved font support and workflow
Like March’s 2.0 release, the 2.1 update focuses primarily on core functionality and usability than art tools.

As well as the new plugin API – introduced in work-in-progress format in 2.0, and now an official part of the engine – the update adds an online Asset Library, intended as a way for users to share scripts or add-ons.

Font support has also been extended, with the option to use any TTF or OTF file in a project.

The engine also now supports live script reloading – any changes made to a script within the editor propagate to the running game – and the performance debugging and profiling tools have been improved.

Improvements to the user interface
There are also a number of changes to the UI, including support for HiDPI displays, full drag-and-drop support within the editor, and contextual menus “in many relevant places”.

Users also get the option to create custom visual themes for the editor, and to customise all of the keybindings.

You can read about all of the new features in more detail, including a number of new workflow options not covered here, via the link at the foot of the story.

Availability
Godot Engine 2.1 is available now under an MIT licence. Binaries are available for 32 and 64-bit Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, while the source code can be found on GitHub.
