Side Effects cuts Houdini educational pricing
Side Effects Software has cut the price of Houdini Education, the non-commercial training edition of its procedural 3D software, from $325/year to $75/year for universities, colleges and training centres.
The Education edition is also now available to high schools and instructors for free.
All educational institutions will have free access to licences of Houdini Engine, which enables Houdini assets to be edited in other DCC applications and game engines, and to render tokens for Houdini’s Mantra renderer.
All the features of Houdini FX, but fewer restrictions than Houdini Apprentice
Like the free Houdini Apprentice, also designed for non-commercial use, the Education edition includes all of the features of Houdini FX, the top-of-the-range $4,495 edition of the software.
It also saves scenes in the same .hipnc format, meaning that students can install the Apprentice edition at home to work on school projects, and still exchange assets freely with the Education edition.
However, it lacks some of the more onerous restrictions of the Apprentice edition, like watermarking and resolution-limitation of renders, lack of FBX and Alembic export, and lack of support for Houdini Engine plugins.
