Get Loic Zimmermann’s tips for directing an indie short
Leading concept artist turned filmmaker Loic ‘e338’ Zimmmermann will be providing practical tips for directing independent movies in a free event at Gnomon’s Hollywood campus tomorrow, also streamed live online.
Hard-won advice on directing your own personal short films
The session will include a screening of Granular (above), an “intense noir picture” based on a poem by the film’s protagonist, Louie Tucci, which documents a lucid dream experience shared between several characters.
The short was fitted around the demands of Zimmermann’s full-time work in VFX production, creating concept art for movies ranging from Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy to the Coen brothers’ True Grit.
In his Gnomon talk, Zimmermann will disucss how he tackled the project, including scheduling talent, the script, the shoot, editing, handling the voiceover, and working with new cameras and lenses.
He will also talk about the importance of taking a leap of faith to create work that is personally fulfilling, as well as how to organise life in a way that allows time to dedicate to personal work.
The event will also include a preview of a new film that Zimmermann is working on in his free time.

Filmmaking and Directing: A Discussion with Loic Zimmermann & Louie Tucci takes place at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects’ Hollywood campus from 8.00-9.30pm on Thursday 24 March.
The event is free to attend, but you’ll need to register online in advance.
