Gnomon ships Creating an Epic Matte Painting Shot

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating an Epic Matte Painting Shot – an entirely self-descriptive new tutorial recorded by Maleficent and Game of Thrones veteran Igor Staritsin.

A complete guide to modern digital matte painting workflow
In the video, which runs for well over seven hours, Staritsin runs through his entire workflow for creating a digital matte painting: in this case, a fantasy architectural scene in a dramatic wooded landscape.

He begins by painting a compositional sketch to establish the mood, before moving to Maya to create base architectural models, then to Photoshop to create the detailed environment, and to Nuke for the final composite.

Along the way, Staritsin explores the do’s and don’ts of creating successful matte paintings, and shares his technical secrets for establishing a more efficient workflow.

About the artist
Igor Staritsin is a senior matte painter and concept designer, with a resume ranging from MPC, Pixomondo, Digic Pictures and Axis Animation to National Geographic magazine.

His credits include Maleficent, Game of Thrones and the cinematics for real-time strategy title Grey Goo.
