Gnomon releases Syd Mead’s Airship Arrival
The Gnomon Workshop has released Airship Arrival, a new training video in practical illustration techniques recorded by legendary Blade Runner and Tron concept designer Syd Mead.
Practical tips and conceptual insights from a master of the art
In the tutorial, which runs for over two hours, Mead shares his techniques for creating a finished illustration of a futuristic airship, starting from a base pencil drawing and building up the image in gouache.
Throughout the process, Mead shares his thoughts on how to depict a design illustration imbued with a sense of presence: an imaginary scene that gives the viewer a sense of actually being there.
According to Gnomon, “With clear vision, inspired by imagination and knowledge of the familiar, a plausible future reality comes together at the hands of a master draftsman, designer and artist.”
About the artist
Syd Mead has been working in concept design for over 50 years, beginning at Ford Motor Company’s Advanced Styling studio and later going on to found his own successful company, Syd Mead, Incorporated.
Having moved to Southern California in 1975, he began creating concept designs for the movie, TV and game industries, including legendary work on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Blade Runner and Tron.
