Gnomon releases Illustration From Imagination

The Gnomon Workshop has released Illustration From Imagination: a new tutorial by illustrator Cameron Scott Davis walking through the creation of his 2D image Blood Eels of the Siren’s Ossuary.

An insight into the workflow of a professional illustrator
In the video, which lasts just under two and a half hours, Davis begins with a loose concept based on a mermaid from mythology, and works it up into a finished image.

Beginning with a scan of a pencil drawing, Davis builds up the image in Photoshop, discussing both rendering techniques and key compositional issues, such as use of lighting, shape and colour.

Davis also provides his career advice for young artists looking to break into the entertainment industry.

The video also features a guest audio appearance by illustrator and teacher Marshall Vandruff, who provides his own reactions to the finished image.

About the artist
Cameron Scott Davis began his career at Neversoft, where he was lead character designer for many of the Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk titles, before working at DreamWorks Animation on movies like The Croods.

He is currently freelance, and is developing Sleepwalker, his own ‘visual narrative’ project.

Pricing and availability
Illustration From Imagination is available from Gnomon’s online store as a digital download. It costs $49.
