Gnomon releases definitive guide to 3D matte painting

The Gnomon Workshop has released a definitive new training DVD on Advanced 3D Matte Painting Techniques, recorded by matte painter and concept artist Garrett Fry.

Suitable for both aspiring artists and experienced professionals, the video demonstrates the latest techniques in use in the visual effects industry.

Create complex projection-based paintings
Over the course of ten hours of training, Fry demonstrates the process of creating a matte painting from end to end, exploring how to plan and problem-solve complex 3D projection-based paintings.

As well as covering painting, modeling, texturing, lighting, rendering, 3D projection and compositing techniques, the video provides tips on how to incorporate photogrammetry to create a more efficient workflow.

Although the video focuses on Maya, Mari and Nuke, the projection set-ups Fry demonstrates are suitable for use in most 3D packages.
