Sony, Panasonic announce sub-$2,000 4K camcorders
Sony and Panasonic have both announced sub-$2,000 cameras capable of capturing 4K video at CES 2014.
Sony’s Handycam FDR-AX100 features a 14.2-Megapixel 1-inch Exmor R CMOS sensor and a BIONZ X processor, shooting full-resolution 4K footage at 30p, and recording up to 120fps. Engadget has more tech specs here.
The camcorder is due to ship in March, with a price tag of $1,999.

Official details of Panasonic’s 4K camera – the new model in its GH line – are thinner on the ground, but Engadget reports that it can record at 200Mbps and will ship in late February.
The downside for serious work is that neither captures RAW footage (seemingly: Sony lists XAVC-S, AVCHD and MP4, and there aren’t any details for the Panasonic model yet) – but with pro 4K cameras like RED’s Scarlet-X starting at around $10,000, the new models represent a considerable drop in price.
