Gnomon ships Mechanical Character Design

The Gnomon Workshop has released Mechanical Character Design: a 200-minute video tutorial on designing mechs recorded by Joe Peterson, senior concept artist at Blizzard Entertainment.

Intended to help viewers create concept art that not only looks cool but fits the needs of real productions, the tutorial covers the design of a mechanised unit for a futuristic SWAT team.

In the video, Peterson explores the real-world elements in which the design is grounded, then builds up the concept stage by stage, creating the underlying mechanical structure, the armour, and then surface decals.

Finally, the design is fine tuned to ensure that it communicates the function of the mech at a glance.
