Eye candy: Pacific Rim’s WonderCon trailer

It seems that all the major studios are releasing trailers for all their upcoming 2013 movies this week. But there was one I was looking forward to more than all the rest – and that is Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures’ Pacific Rim.

I was excited from the very beginning when I heard that Guillermo del Toro, one of my favorite directors, was making a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters. Having grown up watching Japanese monster flicks like Godzilla, I have been waiting for a movie like this my entire life. Though Cloverfield was a noble effort, it lacked the same action and fun – not to mention the fact that we hardly got to see the monster.

As a bonus, the Pan Pacific Defense Corps viral site, through which the trailer was released, also contains news footage of the first Kaiju attack, as well as high-res blueprints for the Jaegers (the giant robots). And is that… GLaDOS from Portal I hear?

Updated 30 April 2013: Pacific Rim’s 12 July release date is fast approaching, but if you can’t wait for your fix of giant-robot-on-monster action, Warner Bros has just posted a new teaser.

The footage was screened at WonderCon last month, and was originally due to be a convention exclusive, but was made publicly available in response to public pressure.

According to a quote from Guillermo del Toro on Warner Bros’ YouTube channel: “After listening to so many of you asking for more of the movie online, I think it’s time for me to show you more footage. Enjoy, my friends!”

Aww. Judging by the latest trailer, the effects ain’t too subtle – but they aren’t too shabby, either.
