Eye candy: V-Ray IRL

See VFX luminaries rob a bank in spoof promo video V-Ray IRL, created for Chaos Group’s ten-year anniversary celebration for the renderer. Note: wonky sound at start due to YouTube compression.

It says something about a product when the people making its promo videos are its fans. It says even more when those fans are Hollywood VFX supervisors.

V-Ray IRL, created for Chaos Group’s ten-year anniversary celebration at Siggraph 2012, sees a bunch of industry luminaries, including Digital Domain’s Christopher Nichols and Blur Studio’s Kevin Margo, attempting to pull off a fictional bank heist – expounding all the while on the renderer’s very factual qualities.

It’s beautifully put together, and there are some lovely geek jokes in there. (“Use unbiased? I don’t have 12 hours for a f**king render. If you want it to look real, just make sure everything has Fresnel in it.”)

We’re just thankful that Margo et al are better at effects than they are organised crime.
