HP has announced that its new Z1 3D workstation will offer an iMac-style all-in-one design.

The workstation, which is expected to ship in April, provides both a specification suitable for high-performance graphics work and a compact set-up complete with integrated 21″ display and wireless keyboard.

Graphics are based around Nvidia’s Quadro M series of mobile workstation cards, and there is a choice of Intel Core i3 or Xeon CPUs, plus support for up to 32GB of RAM.

Unlike the iMac, the Z1 comes with a ‘diagonal’ configuration that enables the unit to fold flat.

HP is making much of the Z1’s snap-open design, which will enable users to upgrade components without the need for tools – but unless there’s something we’re missing, that still leaves the old iMac problem of not being able to update the display independently of the other hardware.

It still looks lovely, though. Pricing starts at $1,899, and you can sign up for updates on the website.
