Legendary Hollywood creature designer Aaron Sims‘ new film, Archetype, is to premiere today as part of the Gnomon School of Visual Effects’ online Master Classes.

Archetype marks Sims’ Hollywood directorial debut. The story of a robot hunted by his creators after becoming self-aware, the seven-minute VFX short is a promo for a full-length feature Sims currently has in development.

Sims told CG Channel that while his agent had advised him to keep Archetype as an in-house pitching tool, he wanted viewers of his Gnomon class to be able to watch the entire short.

“People who take part in the Master Class will be the first ones in the world to see it – even before the studios,” he said.

More real-world VFX training
In addition to Sims’ session on the making of Archetype, the other Master Classes cover real-world production topics, including character animation, lighting and digital effects.

Registration costs $295 and enables viewers to watch all 14 two-hour sessions on demand from today until 19 December, and to interact with the instructor and other students in a private online forum.
