Chaos Group releases Phoenix FD 2.0 for 3ds Max

Chaos Group has released an update to Phoenix FD, its GPU-accelerated fluid simulator for 3ds Max.

Whereas the original release was targeted at smoke, fire and gaseous fluids, in the vein of FumeFX or Maya Fluids, the software has since branched into liquid simulation, offering a grid-based solver.

Phoenix FD 2.0 builds on these capabilities, adding tools for simulating foam and splashes (above), including a new foam particle shader. The results, if this demo is anything to go by, are pretty good (check out the pre-rendered animation right at the end of the video).

The already impressive viewport preview has also been improved, gaining support for diffuse lighting.

Phoenix FD 2.0 is available now for 3ds Max 9 and above, price $960.
