Allegorithmic releases Substance Designer 2

Substance Designer in action with the Unity game engine.

Allegorithmic has released an update to Substance Designer, bringing the texture-authoring package to Mac OS X and introducing a new Lite edition of the software.

The Lite version, which costs $350 as opposed to $990, contains many of the features of its big brother but lacks advanced graph editing and output options, and comes with 50 sample ‘substances’ rather than 130.

Substance Designer 2 itself, which is a free update to registered users, adds new vector paint features and a layer system, which some users may find more intuitive than the existing node-based workflow.

Both versions of the software now come with an embedded Lite version of Allegorithmic’s CrazyBump-like Bitmap2Material filter.

The Substance .sbsar texture format is currently supported in the Unity 3.4 game engine, and by the 2012 editions of Autodesk’s 3ds Max, Maya and Flame.
