3ds Max 2011 on a windows 64 bit machine takes about a minute and a half to start up. Once you get going, forget about anything to do with hardwae shading. Turn it off. Same for AutoCAD 2011. Ardware acceleration being on will crash your machine. Anyone posting anything to the contrary in this discussion is what we call a sock puppet or maybe even a troll. And now Autodesk has come out with 3ds max 2012 saying that all these things have improved. Am I now supposed to upgrade in order to get the functionality I thought I paid for in the first place?

I'm running on a really old laptop here: ATI Radeon HD2600 512MB, AMD Turion 64x2 TL-60 2GHz Dual-Core, 4GB of RAM.
And even so I really hated MAX 2010 and 2011 (both x64) for being so fucking SLOW. Just upgraded to max 2012 x64 today and I really DID see an improvement in performance. Not a huge like Grant did in this video (my laptop being and old fart and all), but Nytrous is faster and I really didn't make it crash so far. One thing I hate, though, are caddies which suck monkeyballs. Slate material editor is another thing I don't like, but it's inevitable when managing huge projects. The hardware renderers (iRay and Quicksilver) work like a charm but they're very picky on shaders and lights. I made this rendering using just the Quicksilver on my day 1 of MAX 2012 trial: http://bit.ly/pIHZ7D
I really like it so far.

I just created a chain of two bones and an IK handle, exported an FBX, opened it in Motionbuilder, switched back to Max and it had become completely unresponsive.
Awful

well, Nitrous works REALLY well with the latest videocards (besides some few bugs with the standard version, but fixed with sp1), if you have a Quadro beyond 3000, or Geforce 5xx / Ati 69xx TRUST ME, it worth it. Load a huge scene with tens of millions of polygons and see the magic. If it not works for you... press the 'Choose Driver' button... :)

Agree with Chris, I can't get even close to the viewport quality in 2011. ATI Sapphire 4850x2 xfire here, plenty of RAM, 4 core AMD Phenom. Never mind, it's a great product.

I have 2012 3dsmax 64bit, and the viewport is worse than 2010 32bit, the viewport realistic shaders look good and excited where its going, but the performance is terrible...rotates and pans with a 3-5 second lag.
and unlike Grant, he said he could not make it crash, i put in a few teapots and guess what it crashed.
I have a nvidia 800 ultra 768mb card.
I wonder is Grant is using a beast of a machine, as I'd rather not touch 2012 yet.
Its a shame really, i was so excited about it. nevermind
one day the creators will produce a product that actually works, instead of rushing things out every year, why not do it every 2 year release, with patches and upgrades during that period, whilst then building up to a major release. guess its all about the money, quantity not quality...
