New eight-minute Final Fantasy XIV Online trailer

Love ’em or hate ’em, you can’t deny that the Final Fantasy games look gorgeous – as Square Enix’s new official gameplay trailer for FFXIV Online demonstrates.

The almost-eight-minute cinematic, released to coincide with the Tokyo Game Show, offers a taste of the upcoming MMO, due for release on Windows on 30 September. The game’s PlayStation 3 release follows in March 2011.

In it, a square-jawed human hero, an elf, an orc and a small child* battle a river monster, then segue seemingly (and seamlessly)  into interstellar combat, all framed by an extended dream motif introducing the game’s playable races.

Will the gameplay live up to the promise of the graphics? The jury is still out, but goddamn it, it does look lovely.

*Yes, we know that should really be ‘Hyur, Elezen, Roegadyn and Lalafell’. We only do it to annoy.
