Tutorial: Lighting and Rendering for Compositing in Modo

Monday, July 5th, 2010 | Article by Ellery Connell

Rendering and compositing to a photographic plate.

This tutorial covers the setup and rendering of a 3D scene matched to a photographic plate as well as the polishing, color correcting and final image sweetening in Photoshop.

We will work in Luxology Modo to set up the scene and match the virtual camera with the physical one that was used in the photograph. Once the scene is setup we will discuss render outputs and settings that will give flexibility when we get into our image editing application. We then talk about using Photoshop to pull the rendered images together, color correct, add depth of field/camera blur, grain and light wrapping in the final composite. While this tutorial uses Modo and Photoshop, a user familiar with most other 3D applications should be able to apply the techniques in the applications of their choice.
