A look at Jordu Schell’s resume reads like a monster movie fan’s dream, having worked on films such as Starship Troopers, Bride of Re-Animator, Guyver, Predator 2, Puppet Master 2, Galaxy Quest, Planet of the Apes, Hulk, Dawn of the Dead, Hellboy, 300, The Mist, Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, Cloverfield, Prince Caspian, Dragonball, and James Cameron’s Avatar. He is even credited with work on music video director Chris Cunningham’s “windowlicker’. Some of his character and creature work resides in the collections of Stephen Spielberg, Rick Baker, and Richard Taylor.
We had the opportunity to interview Jordu at his Gnomon Gallery event in Hollywood. Many of the gallery’s attendees came dressed in full Halloween attire. The masks and creatures displayed on the walls and pedestals all carry a sense of realism that is reinforced through his careful attention to anatomy. From the intense amount detail on a leprechaun or the awe of standing next to an 9 ft alien each of the creatures never failed to impress.
Jordu actually has a large number of masks (that are all meticulously hand painted) available for purchase. Periodically Jordu teaches classes at his studio so its a good website to come back to often. Its also important to note that his masks are for sale….which means you can have a piece of work that usually only studios have the privilege of seeing. Check out his website for more information on purchasing masks.
