The next big Cameron flick?

Friday, February 19th, 2010 | Posted by Matt McCorkell

James Cameron wearing the true mark of an otaku, an anime character t-shirt from Battle Angel Alita.

While a lot of rumors have been flying around about the future of Pandora, one film that Cameron had been planning seemed to fall by the wayside.  MTV news recently cited a John Landau interview which points to Battle Angel Alita coming to the theaters after Avatar 2.  Guess that means for those of you waiting for that Alita movie since before avatar will have to wait a bit longer. Hopefully not another 10 years…but definitely sometime after Avatar 2.

Cover from the little known Comic book series Battle Angel Alita (originally titled Gunnm in Japan).

“’Avatar’ was something Jim had written before, but we were about to embark on a film called ‘Battle Angel: Alita,’ and then we looked at ourselves and said ‘Wait a second, ‘Avatar’ is something that Jim always referred to as his magnum opus, and we can do it now,’” remembered the filmmaker’s producing partner, Jon Landau. “But [‘Battle Angel’] is something that Jim is very, very passionate about. It was actually brought to our attention by another filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro; Guillermo saw those things in the property that he thought would really relate to Jim, and Jim responded to it immediately.”

    Personally, I’d rather see that Neon Genesis live action move that never came to fruition. Weta did some rad concept art then it just sort of dropped of the face of the planet.

    Battle Angel is probably little known because it was a rather weak product. The cliche fix up the robot story converged on some kind of arena end battle with a monster ripped straight out of Slaine: The Horned God (but not in a good way). Such an empty canvas … why not just start from scratch on something original?

    I hope he takes the time he needs. There are so many unimportant and lazy movies out there, I would love to see a great Cameron movie every ten years and I would hate to some some just nice Cameron movies every 3 years.

    @sfjhsrh:
    Every 10 years, are you serious? Avatar was nice, but was it 10 years worth?
    Okay the tech is here now, we don’t have to wait 10 years. How old is Cameron?
    I am not attacking you, I just can’t imagine wait for no movie for an entire decade.

    A good Ghost in the shell or maybe live action FFVII movie might be best.. But if Cameron was to create the MGS movie then that would be the greatest move of all cause 4 was worthy of him doing it live and in real time!!
