Interview with Darksiders artist Paul Richards

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 | Posted by Matt McCorkell | 4 comments

Catch up with Paul Richards concept artist for Darksiders.

How many thumbnails do you need before you start your concepts?  You may be surprised at how much ideation you should go through before you bang out that killer concept drawing.  In professional environments, whoever you report to will want to see as many visual options as possible. In the more options you bring to the table the better.  They don’t have to be super rendered finished concepts but if they get the idea across well enough for you to proceed to the next stage. But just so you know what you are up against check out the awesome thumbnailing power of Paul Richards.

Paul Richards has worked on a Powerhouse Comics, ION Storm, id Software, 3D Realms, Ritual Entertainment, Raven Software, and most recently Vigil Games. His work from Vigil Games can be seen in Joe Madureira‘s Darksiders. The setting for Darksiders is a post-apocalyptic earth where Hell has won. You play as War, one of the four horsemen who must restore the balance to the earth and prove that he wasn’t responsible for Hell’s victory.
